Unseeded players Yash Fadte and Chaitanya Shah played exceptionally to and reach the U-19 Quarter Final round of the 3rd Indian Classic Junior Open Squash Tournament, organised under the aegis of SRFI and SRAM and sponsored by JSW and Raheja Vivarea at the Bombay Gymkhana glass-back squash courts on Tuesday.
16- year-old Yash Fadte of Goa who has been making waves in the Men’s and the Junior circuit played against Raunak Advani of Maharashtra who he defeated by 11-7, 11-1, 11-4. After making it to 2 Semi-Finals in 2 weeks Yash said, “This has been a great couple of weeks for me as I have been put my training to good use and I have gained a lot of confidence by playing some of the top players” when asked about the quarterfinal match he said, I’ve played Raunak before and he is a very skilled opponent. Raunak was relentless at first but I made him move around the court which helped me gain an advantage over him. The other two games were easier to control as he was tired and it helped win the game.”
Chaitanya who caused an upset in the last round followed up on his performance by defeating Ajay Unadkat who is seeded in the (5/8) bracket. Chaitanya’s game was not as clinical as his earlier performances but he managed to pull through the first two games 11-9, 11-8 because of his skills. Chaitanya ensured no errors were made in the third game eventually beating Ajay 11-9, 11-8, 11-2. It will be an exciting semi-final as Chaitanya will take on the India No 1, Tushar Shahani. Meanwhile, Top seed Tushar Shahani bt Shloke Sahaya 11-8, 11-6, 11-4 to advance to the Semis.
In the Girls U-19 match, Unseeded Sanya Vats scored an upset win over the second seed Radhika Rathore to reach the semis. Sanya completely dominated the match leaving no room for Radhika to make a comeback and won the match 11-3, 11-5, 11-8. Sanya will be playing Namvi Sharma who has dropped very few points on her way to the semis. Top Seed Amita Gondi breezed past Shloke Sahay without any difficulties.
