National champion and top seed Mahesh Mangaonkar of Maharashtra faced a quite a challenge from Goa’s Yash Fadte before coming out trumps in four keenly contested games, 11-4, 9-11, 11-3, 11-8, in a Men’s Open quarter-final match of the 75th CCI Western India Open 2018 squash championship, and played at CCI squash courts on Friday. The tournament is conducted under the under aegis of SRFI and MSRA.
Second seed Vikram Malhotra and Abhishek Pradhan the joint 3rd-4th seeds, both from Maharashtra also won their quarter-final encounters and will clash in the semi-finals. Malhotra prevailed over UP’s Jamal Sakib 11-3, 11-3, 12-10, while Pradhan got the better of compatriot Abhishek Agarwal 11-5, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7.
Earlier, the Goan lad Yash produced an impressive strong performance to score an upset straight games win against the joint third-fourth seed Rutvik Rau of Maharashtra in a boys’ under-19 quarter-final match of the CCI 10th Indian Junior Open 2018, which is being conducted concurrently. Yash was aggressive from the start and mixed his shots to take complete control before charging to a fluent 11-6, 11-1, 11-4 win and a place in the semi-finals.
In the penultimate round, Yash will meet Maharashtra’s top seed Tushar Shahani who tamed Services Vaibhav Chauhan 11-6, 11-4, 11-4.
