When Bollywood stars were spotted by Film Journalists ….

Late eighties was the period for many strugglers , who had come to Mumbai to find their entry into Bollywood. I have seen many such artistes, who used to make frequent visits to the film studios, just to say ‘Hi and hello’ to the film makers. But, this was possible for male actors, who could manage their entry at such spots very easily. For young females, they had to solely depend on someone appreciating their talent, through write ups and interviews by film journalists. Nostalgia Amita 1

Those days, not many Film magazines were willing to carry the interviews of newcomers. But, Mr. Firoze Rangoonwala editor of the oldest Film magazine  ‘Picturepost’ was an exception. He had a policy of carrying one interview of a newcomer and a veteran in his magazine. Being a Freelance Journalist, I was assigned this responsibility to search for the young  talent  or a veteran artiste.Nostalia Amita 2

Those days, I used to attend the film functions held late in the evenings and interview the artistes only on Sunday mornings. So, it was easier to spot the right people at the parties and interview them with proper appointment on Sundays. And these Bollywood artistes whether young or veterans, used to oblige, by inviting us to their homes. Believe me, right from Mr. Dev Anand to all those artistes from mega TV serials Ramayan and Mahabharat had obliged. With only Doordarshan acting as electronic media, all the artistes had to depend on the news about them in film magazines, to reach out to their fans and new admirers.

During one such film launch function of ‘Ghabrahat’ , I met this young beautiful leading lady of that multi starrer film. She was Amita Nangia. It was interesting to know about her struggle. So, I decided to i9nterview her at her rented place at Four Bungalows, Andheri.  She was very courteous and displayed promise of becoming a star through her sharp looks. ‘Ghabarahat’ was her first film , followed by six films she signed later. She did get few good films; but later shifted to TV serials like ‘Tara’ and ‘Hum Panch’ during 90s. In ‘Hum Panch’ the role Vidya Balan played on her TV debut, was earlier performed by her.  Amita is still active with films; but now she plays character roles and is content with what comes to her share in this industry.
