On an action-packed day that saw 700 students from 80 schools vying for top honours in Sports For All 2016, Vibgyor High School, Goregaon stole the limelight by becoming the champions in the Girls’ Under-11 basketball tournament at the DY Patil Stadium here on Wednesday.
In a match that was as riveting as it was cute given the heights of the little girls, Vibgyor heaved past Gundecha Education Academy 6-4 to clinch the title. The third place was taken by Lady Ratanbai and Sir Mathuradas Vissanji Academy who beat Vibgyor High School, Airoli 17-2.
In badminton, the Under-15 Boys entered the fray and promptly showed their prowess, with fourth seeded Aditya Desai of Utpal Sanghvi Global School thrashing Hitharth Shah of Universal School 15-3, 15-1. Ansh Mehta of Jamnabai Narsee International School was also in a ruthless form, not dropping a single point to win 15-0,15-0 against Pratim Jare of New Horizon Public School (Airoli).
Rohit More of Sadhu Vaswani International School and Niret Badgire of Ryan International School (Kharghar) were, however, engaged in an intense tussle with their match going down to the wire. Eventually, it was More who held on to his nerve to win 15-10, 8-15, 15-13. In another match, Romit Addagatta of Radcliff School pulled off a stunning comeback to beat Karim Muharram of Sadhu
Vaswani International School 9-15, 15-14,15-11.
In the Under-16 boys’ category, local team DY Patil International School (Nerul) established themselves as one of the teams to watch out for in football. In their opening league match, they decimated Ryan International School, Malad 6-2, thanks to Simranpreet Negi who pumped in four goals. Rishi Chalwade and Sumin Lee also got on the goalscoring charts with a goal apiece.
Don Bosco Senior Secondary School (Nerul) also started their campaign in a dominating fashion beating Janki Devi Public School (Andheri) 5-0. Shantanu Vanire was the pick of the players grabbing two goals while Adarsh Mishra, Johel Tanaji and Mohammad Farzam chipped in with one goal each
With SFA approaching its halfway stages, it is going to get more exciting and tomorrow will be a heavy duty day with over 3000 students from over 250 schools gearing up to participate in six different sports – football, basketball, badminton, tennis, volleyball and handball.
