Speaking on the occasion, Dilip Vengsarkar said, “I am humbled by the spirit of the blind cricketers. They are an inspiration for the whole world and there cannot be a better platform than this where they can exhibit their talent, willpower and passion for the game and life. I thank the CABI for their wonderful efforts over the years in fostering the game for the blind and I pledge my support towards the cause of Cricket for the Blind.”

The cricket legend also mentioned that MCA (Mumbai Cricket Association) is prepared to extend all the support to CABI in their efforts to organize a tournament of such magnitude. “The MCA would be happy to be associated with this event. We have many grounds of international standards in Mumbai and we would be willing to host all the matches. Our (MCA) offer stands as this would mean a small contribution from MCA,” said Vengsarkar, who is the Vic-president of MCA.

Vengsarkar recalled his experience when he was once invited by CABI to inaugurate the National Championship in Lucknow a couple of years ago. “It was a pleasure to witness a cricket match played by visually impaired players. I got to watch some great cricket and it was an interesting match. I compliment the players for the passion and hardwork. I saw fielders diving all over and even taking some good catches.”

The CABI was overwhelmed by Vengsarkar’s presence at the event. Thanking one of the greatest cricketers of all-time for his support, CABI President Mahantesh G K said, “We are extremely delighted that Vengsarkar sir released the Match Fixtures of the 2nd T20 World Cup Cricket for the Blind. I profusely thank Mr. Vengsarkar for having taken time out of his busy schedule to be part of this event. His presence will motivate the blind cricketers and will boost their confidence.”

The World Cup Tournament will be held from January 28, 2017 to February 12, 2017 in various cities across the country. Multiple matches will be held in Mumbai as well. “I am personally excited about the way the preparations are shaping up and I am confident that we will have a successful tournament in this global awareness initiative for visually impaired by Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled and Cricket Association for the Blind in India,” Mr. Mahantesh added.

The tournament will be played from January 28 to February 12, with the tournament inaugural hosted in New Delhi and the Tournament Grand Finale in Bengaluru. India, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies will be participating in the World Cup. The tournament will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis in multiple cities across India.

Earlier this month, Rahul Dravid was announced as the Brand Ambassador for this edition of the T20 World Cup Cricket for the Blind. He also launched CABI’s ‘Support Blind Cricket by buying a Cricket Ball’ campaign on the occasion. Students and general public can purchase a cricket ball online www.blindcricket.in to support the cause of cricket for the blind.

“The Indian team has an interesting talent pool and their preparation in the run up to the World Cup will be crucial. I wish good luck to the Indian team and all other participating international Teams. I personally appeal people to come out and watch matches in the stadium to encourage the players,” added Vengsarkar.

“Cricket is more than a religion in India and supporting the passion among visually impaired strengthens the inherent sportsmanship. The game imparts discipline, teamwork, fitness, strategic planning and competitiveness with focus on skills rather disabilities. Eventually, blind cricket would help the visually impaired integrate into mainstream and offer employment opportunities. Cricket for the Blind in India needs avid support and continuous financial contribution & sponsorships from society, corporate and the Government towards development of the game, infrastructure, tournament expenses and player fee,” pointed out Mr. Mahantesh.

Expenses towards Hosting and Organizing the 2nd T20 World Cup Cricket for the Blind is estimated at INR 24.5 Crores. CABI appeals to corporates, govt. and people of the country to come forward to sponsor and contribute. All contributions are exempt from Income Tax under 80G. Additionally it is also listed under the Para-Sports category of Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative.
