Vedika breaks national mark; Armaan sets two meet records


Vedika Amin and Armaan Sikka, both from Otters Club set the pool ablaze with their record-breaking efforts on the opening day of the annual Maharashtra State age group aquatic meet organized by the Maharashtra State Amateur Aquatic Association in association with the Greater Mumbai Amateur Aquatic Association  at Goregaon Sports Club at their sprawling Olympic  size swimming pool here today. The day proved to be out and out Mumbai show with all the five new meet records (including nationals) were set by the local swimmers.

Vedika’s timing of 1:21.36 seconds in the  girls group III 100m breast stroke event bettered the  national record of Karnataka’s Vania Kapoor, who had clocked 1:21.96 seconds in 2013. Another Otters boy Armaan Sikka was credited with two new records in the corresponding boys category. Armaan won the 100m butterfly and freestyle events. Armaan first eclipsed Neel Roy’s 2013 record (01:09.84 secs) with a timing of 01:09.62 secs in the buttefly event and then rewrote Aryan Makhija’s 2012 timing of 01:03.96 secs in the 100m freestyle by clocking 01:03. 44 secs.

Results of the record-breaking events:

GIRLS (Group III): 100m Breast Stroke: 1. Vedika Amin (Mum)- 01:21.36 secs- NEW NATIONAL RECORD; 2. Kareena Shankta (Mum); 3. Ananya Pandey ((Mum). (Old national record – 01:21.96 secs –2013).

BOYS: (Group I): 100m Breast Stroke: 1. Siddharth Sanke (Mum)-NMR; 2. Mufaddal Kapasi (Mum); 3. Aryan Kedare (Thane). – 01:08.70 secs. (Old record – 01:10.01 secs –2013).

(GROUP II): 200m Back Stroke: 1. Aaryan Bhosale (Mum)- NMR; 2. Karan Dharmadhikari (Kolhapur); 3. Pruthviraj Sasane (Kolhapur). (Old record – 02:22.12 secs –2015).

(Group III): 100m Butterfly Stroke: 1. Armaan Sikka (Mum) – NMR); 2. Anvesh Prasade (Pune); 3. Gaurav Upaddhyay (Mum). (Old record – 01:09.84 secs –2013).

100m Free Style: 1. Armaan Sikka (Mum) – NMR); 2. Angath Sadanah (Mum); 3. Aryan Varnekar (Satara). -01:03.44 secs. (Old record – 01:03.96 secs –2012).

In the diving contests too, it was Mumbai’s Simran Rajani 329.30) and Medhali Redkar (Mumbai- 287.20) who dominated the girls Group I section were credited with new records.

Mumbai’s Satvik Gerri, who set new meet mark in the boys group II category by aggregating 342.20 points. Incidentally, Nihal Giram (Solapur- 312.00), Anuj Shah (Mumbai-297.40) and  and Nishant Agrawal (Mumbai- 284.35), too, broke the old record of 261.40 points in the Springboard section. While Solapur’s Bilwa Giram  (195.75) and Aarya Parkmark (Mumbai- 174.55), who topped in the girls section, too, set new marks in their corresponding category.
