Vedant Madhavan, from American School of Bombay, was the sole record-breaker, while winning the boys 100m free style event in the under-13 category on the opening day of the GMAAA inter-school/junior colleges swimming championships, held at Borivali’s Mandpeshwar Civic Federation Sports Complex swimming pool, here today.
In fact Vedant ended the day with five golds, and 1 silver to aggregate 40 points. He first eclipsed the 2014 Neel Roy’s record of 00.57.48 by clocking 00.57.34 secs in the 100m free style event. Vedant also won the 100m individual medley, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breast stroke, but had to settle for silver in the 50m butterfly event.
While in the girls under-13 section, it was Kiara Bangera, of Dhirbhai Ambani school, who topped. She, too, like Vedant ended with five golds and a silver- but her efforts failed to create any new mark.
Tomorrow it will be the swimmers in the age group 15 and 17, who will be vying for top honour.
