Varun Majumdar impresses in Matunga Gym’s win


 

Collegian Varun Majumdar was pretty fast and aggressive  against Ishan  Kapur while winning his singles tie 21-11, 21-17 to steer Matunga Gymkhana to facile 2-0 win over hosts’ Bombay Gymkhana’s junior string on the opening day of the Motiram Club (for men) Inter-Club badminton  tournament, hosted by Bombay Gymkhana in association with IndusInd Bank,  at their badminton courts here last night. After Matunga Gymkhana was given a flying start by Akshay Pawar and Viplav Kuwale,who took the first doubles with ease, bespectacled Varun, who is still a junior, played aggressively, as he made his rival Ishan Kapoor run all over the court  before wrapping up the tie.

For PJ Hindu Gymkhana Punit Bane won singles against Rustom Modi  of Bombay Gymkhana’s ‘C’ team, while their doubles pair of Shreyas Dharia & Punit Bang beat  Shirish Nadkarni & Rustom Modi to enable their Gymkhana beat the hosts 2-1.

Thirty six teams, including Champions Goregaon Sports Club, will be vying for top honours. While   top seede, other top men teams like Cricket Club of India, hosts Bombay Gymkhana ‘A’ and Chembur Gymkhana, too have  been directly seeded into last eight. The champions GSC in fact, are also top seeded in the women’s Ullal Cup and juniors Kanji Memorial Cup as well..
