Unseeded Shreya sends top seed Bhakti packing


Unseeded Shreya Chakraborty of West Bengal caused a major upset when she sent top seed Bhakti Parwani of Gujarat crashing out in the second round of the girls’ singles event of the MSLTA – Yonex Sunrise 12th Ramesh Desai Memorial CCI All India Nationals Under-16 (boys & girls) Tennis Tournament 2018.

The Kolkata girl, Shreya ranked 60th on the AITA ranking list, played aggressively and with lots of confidence to topple India’s second ranked Bhakti in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, at the Cricket Club of India tennis courts on Tuesday.

 

Meanwhile, fifth seed Lakshmi Vutukuru of Andhra Pradesh, sixth seed Bela Tamhankar of Maharashtra, seventh seed Srujana Rayarala and eighth seed Gargi Pawar also of Maharashtra were the other seeded player who fell by the wayside.

 

The Andhra girl Lakshmi was unable to beat back a spirited challenge from Maharashtra Akanksha Nitture losing in three games at 2-6, 7-6(4), 4-6 in a long match while Bela after winning the first set against Telengana’s Sanjana Sirimalla was unable to maintain the winning momentum and tamely lost the next two sets and succumbed to a 6-4, 0-6, 2-6 defeat, while on another court her compatriot Gargi suffered a straight sets loss to Tamil Nadu’s Vipasha Mehra 3-6, 1-6. But, Maharashtra’s Rutuja Chaphalkar tasted success when she stunned Srujana, comfortably coasting to a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

 

Meanwhile, the boys’ top two seeds Krishan Hooda of Chandigarh and Udit Gogoi of Assam easily won their respective second round encounters, to smoothly cruise into the next round. Hooda prevailed over qualifier Maanav Jain of Karnataka 6-3, 6-1, while Gogoi proved too strong for Anish Rampola of Tamil Nadu and did not concede a game as he closed out a 6-0, 6-0 win.
