Unseeded Manjunath Chavan caused a major sensation as he sent top seed Siddhesh Raut crashing out by recording an authoritative straight games 21-12, 21-8 win in a Men’s singles round of 16 match of the CCI-GMBA Yonex Sunrise District Badminton Championship 2023, and played at the CCI badminton courts on Tuesday.
Chavan, who trains and coaches at the Cricket Club of India made optimum advantage of the home conditions. The fitter Chavan showed great dexterity and clever tactics to outsmart the number one seed Raut and canter to victory without much ado.
Meanwhile, seasoned campaigner Nigel D’Sa was left off the hook by Jawad Shaikh who after leading throughout went down in straight games at 19-21, 19-21. Shaikh enjoyed substantial leads in both games, but squandered the advantage by making some silly unforced errors and finished on the losing side.
In Girl’s Under-17 quarter-final encounters, the top two seeds Naishaa Bhatoye Riya Vinherkar easily won their matches and advanced to the semi-finals. The top seed Naishaa defeated Risha Nandiwdekar 21-3, 21-2 and second seed Riya overcame Nidhi Mohile 21-3, 21-5.
