Union Bank recover to down HDFC Bank 2-1


Union Bank of India played with plenty of grit and determination and scored twice in the final three minutes to score a come-from-behind 2-1 win against a spirited HDFC Bank in an evenly contested Elite (Corporate) Division match of the Mumbai Football Association (MFA) League 2022-2023, and played at the Cooperage football ground, Colaba.

After HDFC Bank striker Siddhesh Butavale scored the opening goal in the 70th minute to give his team the lead. But, Union Bank of India produced a determined late fight and restored parity through Elvis Fernandes in the 87th minute before Sumedh Kanadale scored the second goal in the 90th minute to help his team snatch a tight victory and pick up all the three points.

Both Union Bank of India and HDFC Bank finished their league engagements with 20 and 18 points respectively. Union Bank of India currently occupy the third position behind leaders and champions Air India 31 points and runners-up Century Rayon 23 points and with a game in hand against Income Tax on Wednesday. HDFC are in sixth position. Last year’s champions Bank of Baroda with 18 points and a win in their final league match against bottom-placed ESIC will lift them up to the third spot ahead of Union Bank of India who will be pushed to the fourth position.

In a Women’s Super Div encounter, at the Neville D’Souza ground, Bandra, Gaia Ferro scored an early goal which enabled D’Souza Football Academy to clinch a narrow 1-0 win against India Rush and pocket the full three points.

In an exciting a keenly contested First Division match, Anstrengung United riding on Moses Alexander’s lone strike got the better of Goregaon Sports Club by a narrow 1-0 margin to emerge victors.
