Dion Menezes led the charge as Union Bank of India produced a late fight back to overcome Western Railway 2-1 in the opening Elite Division match, of the MDFA League 2017-2018, which commenced at the Cooperage ground on Friday.
Trailing 0-1 after Reuben D’Souza scored in the 42nd minute to put Western in front. But, Union Bank put up a determined fight and struck twice at the death to clinch victory. First Scott D’Souza scored from a penalty in the 88th minute before Dion Menezes struck the crucial winner in the second minute of additional period to ensure the win and secure the full three points for the bankers.
Western took off the right track against the spirited Union Bank outfit who also fough hard and both the teams made some attempts at goal initially. But, the railway outfit managed to succeed in finding the back of the net 42nd minute when their tried and trusted striker Reuben against the run of play found the back of the net.
Union Bank made a strong reply after switching ends and held a slight edge but they had to wait till late to find the equaliser when Dion’s shot at goal struck the hand of a Western defender and referee Dinesh Yadav hd no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Scott successfully converted before Dion snatched a winner in extra time.
