Umaima Sabuwala and Aarya Jadhav were engaged in a keen tussle for supremacy. But, the gritty Umaima managed to clinch a satisfying 15-14, 15-12 victory in a thrilling girls’ under-15 first round match of the Greater Mumbai Badminton Association ‘50th Golden Jubilee’ badminton tournament, organized by the Bombay Gymkhana and Badminton 45 and played at the Bombay Gymkhana courts on Friday evening.
Meanwhile, top seed Taarini Suri had an easy first round defeating Maira Devnani 15-1, 15-3 and second seed Nirmitee Gajbhiye also had things much her own way against Pahal Thakkar recording a 15-6, 15-10 win, in another first round clash.
Neerva Negi did not have to exert too much as she blanked Ananya Bagwe coasting to 15-0, 15-0 win. In another one-sided encounter, Deepti Pillay dropped just one points in charging past Tanishka Nandgaonkar 15-1, 15-0 to move into the second round.
In two interesting and well-contested encounters, Taarushi Yadav fought hard to overcome Avni Kanani 15-13, 15-8 and Avni Arlekar faced quite a challenge from Divya Gadkari before pulling through at 15-9, 15-8.
