Top seed Siddhant Rewari breezes into last 16


Top-seeded Siddhant Rewari of Maharashtra who trains at the Bombay Gymkhana courts showed great touch and with clever tactics outsmarted his state mate Sudarshan Achar by charging to an 11-0, 11-3, and 11-2 victory in a boys’ under-19 second round match of the Bombay Gymkhana 47th Maharashtra State Open All India Squash Tournament 2024, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Parfums and co-sponsored by Indian Oil, and played at the Gymkhana’s courts, on Sunday.

Top-seeded Siddhant Rewari of Maharashtra eased past state mate Sudarshan Achar in three quick games in a boys’ U-19 second round match.

In the girls’ under-15 competition, Maharashtra’s Aaravi Raina displayed tremendous resilience and brushed aside compatriot Dharmi Hiru Pardhi in five engrossing games. The Pune-based Aaravi narrowly lost the first two games, but showing solid fighting spirit she pocketed the next three games to clinch a hard-fought 9-11, 16-18, 11-8, 14-12, 11-8 win in a first round match.

In another all-Maharashtra contest that went the distance, Asha Nirguda quelled the challenge from Jai Lende carving out an 11-4, 3-11, 4-11, 11-6, and 11-9 win to progress to the second round.

In contrast, Delhi’s Maira Ghosh dominated her match against Mishika Singh of Maharashtra and raced to a quick 11-2, 11-1, and 11-1 win. However, Karnataka’s Deepshika Thorat crashed out at the first hurdle going down to Maharashtra’s Laxmi Lachka in four games at 11-5, 3-11, 7-11, and 11-13.

Meanwhile, a determined Urvaksh F Mogrelia of West Bengal scored another hard-fought win against Maharashtra’s Krushna Darvada snatching a tense 11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, and 11-6 success to advance to the men’s third round.

In other men’s second round encounters, top two seed Veer Chotrani of Maharashtra got the better of compatriot and unseeded Tushar Shahani 11-6, 11-7, and 11-5 and second seed Rahul Baitha also from Maharashtra eased past state mate Prashant Sagar recording a 11-5, 11-5, and 11-4 win to progress to the next round.

Also advancing to the third round was the joint third and fourth seeds, Om Semwal who beat Deepak Mandal 11-7, 11-5, 5-11, and 11-7 in an all-Maharashtra contest. On the adjacent court, defending champion Mahesh Mangaonkar of Maharashtra outshone Karnataka’s Sugumar Muthukrishnan winning in quick games at 11-1, 11-3, and 11-7.
