Top seed Krishan Hooda bows out


 

Top seed Krishan Hooda of Chandigarh suffered a shock defeat at the hands of unseeded Mohit Bondre of Gujarat in a boys’ singles third round match of the MSLTA – Yonex Sunrise 12th Ramesh Desai Memorial CCI All India Nationals Under-16 (boys & girls) Tennis Tournament 2018. The Chandigarh lad, ranked number three on the AITA Ranking list struggled against his 26th ranked Gujarat opponent and bowed out losing in straight sets at 4-6, 4-6, at the Cricket Club of India tennis courts, Churchgate on Wednesday.

However, second seed Udit Gogoi of Assam, third seed Sushant Dabas and fourth seed Divesh Gahlot, both from Haryana, stayed on course, to advance to the quarter-finals.

 

The Assam challenger Udit, who is fifth on the AITA Rankings, recovered well after losing the first set to prevail over Maharashtra’s Aryan Bhatia, pulling through at 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 to make into the last eight round.

 

In the other pre-quarter-final ties, Sushant was a fluent 6-4, 6-2 winner over his state mate Aaryan Pandit, while Divesh easily defeated Maharashtra’s Amaan Tezabwala 6-1, 6-2 to progress to the quarter-finals.

 

In girls’ singles action, Vanshika Choudhary of Uttar Pradesh showed great resilience and fighting spirit as she clawed her way back to overcome qualifier Akanksha Nitture of Maharashtra in a pre-quarter-final match. The Noida based Vanshika lost a close first set but then made a strong reply by comfortably winning the next two sets to clinch a deserving 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-2 win and seal her place in the last eight. Vanshika also enjoyed a successful doubles outing as she combined perfectly with Haryana’s Sandeepti Rao to tame the pair of Chandrika Joshi Karnataka and Telangana’s Srujana Rayarala 6-2, 6-2 to charge into the semi-finals.

 

However, another qualifier Vipasha Mehra of Tamil Nadu advanced to the quarter-finals defeating Maharashtra’s 11th seed Richa Chougule 6-2, 7-6(5).
