Tejas Dongre, from Dombivli Gymkhana, bagged gold in the discus throw event by hurling it over 40 metres , while lanky Leon Poorekhosandi , of Trackblazers, Andheri, blazed past his rival midway to clinch 400m gold in the YMCA’s 40th State Level Athletic championships, held at Sports Authority of India, Kandivali here today. However, Leon’s timing of 49.6 secs. was 0.6 secs short of Sabino Fernandes’ record of49 secs set way back in 1983.

However, the credit of creating new record went to the girls in the under-14 section. Charvi Poojar from Thane’s Seven stars Academy broke the 200m record of Sushmita Patil, of 27.5 secs set in 2010, with a timing of 26.7 secs. Not only that even the second- placed Nicole Franco of Prabodhan, Goregaon too eclipsed Sushmita record. Nicole clocked 26.8 secs, just 0.1 sec behind the winner. Shruti Vora was another discusdiscus thrower to catch the eye as she clinched gold in the women’s event.
