Tamil Nadu boys and girls clinch grand double crowns


Tamil Nadu boys and girls dished out impressive steady performances to clinch a grand double, winning the Sub-Junior girls’ and boys’ Team Championship crowns in the of the LIC of India sponsored 44th Sub-Junior National and Inter-State Carrom Championship, organized by the All India Carrom Federation and hosted by the Maharashtra Carrom Association, at the Halari Visa Oswal Samaj Hall, Dadar (East) on Thursday evening.

The Tamil Nadu lads hardly put a foot wrong as they quashed the aspirations of Delhi 3-0 in the final. The Tamil Nadu youngsters M. Kaushik and A. Musaraf, both playing the singles and the doubles pair of Guruprasath and R. Sandeep played with a lot of consistency in leading the southern outfit to victory.

 

In the girls’ final, the Tamil Nadu team comprising of Janashri and A. Roshini Shree and the doubles combination of A. Rithika and R. Rathika maintained their fine run of form to tame Uttar Pradesh by a convincing 3-0 margin and grab the top honours.

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu boys’ and girls’ teams quelled the challenge from home favourites Maharashtra outfits in the Team Championship semi-finals.

 

In the boys’ semi-finals, the overall superior Tamil Nadu blanked Maharashtra 3-0, while in the girls encounter the team from the south managed to pull off a 2-1 victory to progress to also progress to the title round.

 

In the other boys’ semi-final, Delhi beat back a spirited fight from Bihar before clinching a close 2-1 verdict. Uttar Pradesh defeated Chandigarh 3-0 in the second sub-junior girls’ semi-finals.

 

Meanwhile, PSPB pairs reached the semi-finals of the men’s and women’s doubles events of the 24th Federation Cup All India Carrom Championship, conducted simultaneously.

 

In the men’s doubles action,  K.Srinivas and Sandeep Deorukhkar (PSPB) got the better of Prashant More and L. Suryaprakash (RBI) 25-14, 7-25, 25-11, while their teammates Yogesh Pardeshi and K. Ramesh Babu (PSPB) put it across Zaheer Pasha and Ravi Waghmare (RBI) 25-6, 19-25, 25-17 to set up a clash in the final.

 

In the women’s doubles semi-final contests, Nagajyoti and I. Ilavazhki (PSPB) recovered after dropping the first game to sideline the young Tamil Nadu duo of R. Gayatri and L. Amshavarthini winning at 1-25, 25-1, 25-10, while Rashmi Kumari and Kajal Kumari (PSPB) easily defeated Sangeeta Chandorkar and Kavita Somanchi (RBI) 25-8, 25-20, to book their berths in the final.

Semi-finals: Delhi beat Bihar 2-1 (Mohd. Nashid lost Shoaib Alam 21-10, 6-21, 8-21; Mohd. Areeb bt Md. Faiyaz Ali 8-17, 21-0, 21-2; Mohd. Faraz/Mohd. Zeeshan bt Aditya Raj/Imran Ansari 9-7, 11-14, 10-8).

Semi-final: Tamil Nadu beat Maharashtra 2-1 (Janashri bt Keshav Nirgun 21-4, 21-0; A. Roshini Shree bt Shruti Sonawane 9-10, 18-1, 24-0; A. Rithika/R. Rathika lost Akanksha Kadam/Amuya Rajula 5-21, 11-21).

 

Uttar Pradesh beat Chandigarh 3-0 (Reetambhara bt Gungun Kakkar 22-0, 23-0; Mantasha Iqbal bt Sangini Mamgain 21-0, 19-11; Anjali Gupta/Sneha Chavan bt Vadhavi/Ayesha 15-9, 13-6).
