State’s top sprinter Sunil Shetty from Sprinters Club and Akshaya Iyer, the current Mumbai university sprint queen, established their credentials in emphatic manner while winning their respective 100m sprint events in the India Masters Athletics’ Inaugural Five-District Open Track And Field Championships, held at the University Stadium here today. Sunil pipped Ajit Singh from Navi Mumbai’s Agnel Gymkhana in a terrific burst at the finish, clocking 11.1 secs. The districts participating this meet are: Mumbai city, Mumbai Suburbs, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar.
Sunil Shettya and Akshaya Iyer won their respective 100m sprint events, in the India Masters Athletics’ Inaugural Five-District Open Track And Field Championships.
Likewise Akshaya Iyer just breasted the tape, fraction of a second ahead of Shweta Hakke, a recent winner of the 100 and 200m events i8n the YMCA meet held only last week. Akshaya clocked 12.3 secs.
However, Preet Surve from Thane’s Seven Star was the outstanding performer of the day. He won two gold medals, in the boys under-16 long jumps and 100m events.
