Stany takes sole lead in IIFL Chess


International Master Stany G.A. (5 points) moved into the sole lead after the fifth round of the IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Open Chess Tournament 2016, and being played at Mount Litera School International, Bandra (East), Mumbai, here, on Monday.

In a dynamic Philidor game, Stany accounted for International Master Nitin S, to maintain his cent percent score.
Following Stany at 4.5 points were Shardul Gagare, Swapnil S Dhopade, Akshat Khamparia along with Himal Gusain. Top seed Shradul and Swapnil shared honours and a point as they were involved in a draw on the top board.
In an upset of the day, 9-year-old Gukesh D of Chennai stunned higher seeded Navalgund Niranjan.

Meanwhile, top seed Mohammad Fahad Rahman (4.0) lead the field after the fourth round in the junior event. Running Rahman close in the title race is the talented Nagpur boy Sadhwani Raunak, who accounted for S Abhinessh in the second board. Both the favorites lead with 4.0 points, with several players behind.

Earlier, the newest Grandmaster-elect Shardul Gagare, who completed his GM title requirement was felicitated in a grand manner. Mr Karan Bhagat, MD & CEO, IIFL Wealth Group, presented Shradul with a Offering a shawl and garland made of pearls and praised the Indian lad. “This is a great achievement by this youngster. With this kind of momentum I foresee India producing 100 Grandmasters by 2020,” he stated.
