St. Teresa’s Convent, Santacuz clinched a grand double winning the girls’ under-14 and under-16 titles in the Lawrence Bing organized Winter Rink hockey tournament, approved by Hockey India and played at the Dominic Savio HS hockey turf, Andheri on Saturday. This is the first hockey tournament to be played in the city following the Covid-19 lockdown.
In the under-14 final, St. Teresa’s had things much their own way and sidelined Canossa Convent, Andheri by a 3-1 margin to emerge champions. Madhvi Mhatre scored St. Teresa’s opening goal in the fifth minute before captain Wilona Rodrigues doubled the lead scoring the second in the 15th minute. Later, Tamanna Sonkar pulled one back for Canossa Convent before Tannavi Thikrul struck the third goal to secure St. Teresa’s success.
The girls’ under-16 final, between St. Teresa’s and Gokuldham, Goregaon witnessed a high-scoring and absorbing contest for supremacy before the former managed to scrape through by a close 6-4 margin. In a match of fluctuating fortunes St. Teresa’s who were well-served by their talented forwards of Hetal Goswami and Sanjana Salunke, both scoring three goals each, enjoyed a slender 4-3 half-time lead. Gokuldham’s Shravani Sawant kept her team in the fight with three quick goals while skipper Roshni Patel chipped in with one.
There was more joy for the Santacruz school girls as Wilona and Hetal were later declared as the ‘Best Player’ in the girls’ under-14 and girls’ under-16 categories respectively.
Results (all finals) – Girls’ under-14: St. Teresa’s HS, Santacruz 3 (Madhvi Mhatre, Wilona Rodrigues, Tannavi Thikrul) beat Canossa Convent, Andheri 1 (Tamanna Sonkar).
Girls’ under-16: St. Teresa’s HS, Santacruz 6 (Hetal Goswami 3, Sanjana Salunke 3) beat Gokuldham HS 4 (Shravani Sawant 3, Roshni Patel).
