St. Andrew’s emerge champions


 

St. Andrew’s Parish, Bandra prevailed over St. Anthony’s Parish, Vakola 5-3 via the tie-breaker in the final of the Footcom 2018, an inter-parish football tournament, organized by the Bombay Catholic Sabha and played at the Cooperage football ground.

For the first time a girls’ match was held between St. Anthony’s, Malwani and Mount Carmel, Bandra. The Bandra team managed to pull off a 1-0 win with Johanna Jenson scoring the lone goal of the match.

 

In a keenly fought title-deciding match, the scores were tied 1-all at the end of regulation period and penalty shootout duel was enforced to settle the outcome of the summit clash. Leander Dharmai scored for St. Andrew’s and Joseph Pires was on target for St. Anthony’s in normal play.

 

In the ensuing tie-breaker contest, Leander Dharmai, Ronak Killinger, Jonathan D’Souza and Roy Lewis successfully converted for the Bandra parish, while St. Anthony’s could only score two of their attempts through Joseph Pires and Jofa D’Souza.

 

However, there was some consolation for St. Anthony as their goalkeeper Shawn Gomes for his impressive showing under the bar won the ‘Golden Glove’ award. Shawn’s teammate upfront Alviro Fernandes, who scored goals consistently bagged the ‘Golden Boot’ award.

 

Results – Men finals: St. Andrew’s, Bandra 5 (Leander Dharmai 2, Ronak Killinger 1, Jonathan D’Souza 1, Roy Lewis 1) beat St. Anthony, Vakola 3 (Joseph Pires 2, Jofa D’Souza 1).

 

Girls’: Mount Carmel Parish, Bandra 1 (Johanna Jenson 1) beat St. Anthony’s Parish, Malwani 0.
