Sparsh Pherwani of Cricket Club of India emerged as the State Champion, both in junior snooker and junior billiards events of the Khar Gymkhana BSAM Sub-Junior and Junior Billiards & Snooker State Selection Tournament 2018.
The young CCI cueist, who is India’s number two in both formats, had a direct entry to the two ‘Super’ finals and on both occasions he defeated Radio Club’s Rayaan Razmi, who had finished as Maharashtra number one in the State Selection Tournaments.
In the snooker final, the talented Sparsh quelled a strong, spirited challenge from a determined Rayaan to snatch a tight 3-2 win in the best-of-5 frame contest. Sparsh started with a bang as he neatly constructed an accomplished unfinished century break of 119 in pocketing the opening frame. Rayaan made a strong reply by comfortably winning the second, but lost a close third as Sparsh regained the lead. Showing the stomach for a fight, Rayaan went on to take the fourth to once again level the match scores at 2-all and force the deciding fifth frame. Sparsh with some steady play managed to call the shots in the final frame and stitched together small but useful breaks to pull through to complete a well-deserved 119-4, 58-84, 53-47, 35-72, and 72-26 victory.
The billiards final was also a close affair, but Sparsh who was more consistent managed to overcome Rayaan 545-391 in the two-hour contest.
