Soni,Thyagrajan recover to advance into second round


 

Aaroh Soni of Maharashtra fought hard to overcome Karnataka’s Ravi Madabhushi in four games pulling off a 6-11, 18-16, 11-4 and 11-4 win in a men’s first round match of the 4th NSCI All India Open (Junior and Senior) Squash Tournament 2019, at the NSCI squash courts on Saturday,

Maharashtra’s Abhinav Thyagarajan also rallied from the loss of the first game to sideline his compatriot Divit Poojary winning in four games at 8-11, 11-5, 11-5 and 11-7 to progress to the second round.

 

Meanwhile, Maharashtra lad Agastya Bansal, who had recently clinched the boys’ under-11 crown in the Southern Slam Junior Squash tournament in Chennai, continued with his impressive form to defeat Harshman Saharia 11-4, 11-4, 11-2 in a boy’s U-11 second round encounter. The chirpy Bombay Scottish student Agastya had defeated the top seed Subhash Choudhary of Rajasthan in the Chennai final.

 

Subhash Choudhary who is the top seed warmed up perfectly by taming Maharashtra’s Vivan Rajpuria 11-0, 11-0, 11-1 in a second round encounter.

 

Savir Sood and Hridhaan Shah both from Maharashtra were locked in a grim battle for supremacy before the former managed to scrape  through snatching a 7-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-4 victory to advance to the third round.

 

Earlier, Abhiraj Singh of Uttar Pradesh lost the first game but made a good recovery and won the next three games in succession to record a satisfying victory over Maharashtra’s Mitansh Jain in a boys’ under-13 first round match. The UP lad Abhiraj got off to hesitant start and lost a close first game. But he showed excellent fighting spirit and after finding his touch he managed to win the next three games to snatch a 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 win and advance to the second round.

 

In other matches, Maharashtra youngster Nikhil Pande also dropped the first game but managed to fight back to defeat Sahir Sethi of Delhi 9-11, 11-9, 11-5 and 11-6.

 

Meanwhile, Vedant Chheda of Maharashtra proved too strong for compatriot Krishnav Bubna coasting to a fluent 11-0, 11-1, 11-3 victory in another first round match.
