P.J.Hindu Gymkhana Veterans’ State TT Championship
There were many surprises in the Men’s team event of the P.J.Hindu Gymkhana Veterans’ State Table Tennis championship, being played at the Gymkhana premises at Marine Lines, under the auspices of Mahatashtra Veterans’ TT Association and Mumbai City District TT Association.
Late evening yesterday, both the teams of the host gymkhana, were knocked out. But, the biggest surprise was from Captain Colony team, which knocked out well balanced P.J.Hindu Gymkhana ‘B’ team comprising of former international Suhas Kulkarni & Veterans’65+ champion Pinakin Sampat in the quarter finals.
The Gymkhana team led 2-0 , when both Suhas and Pinakin won their respective matches. But, after losing the important doubles match to Percy Mehta and Sarosh Shroff ,Captain Colony team won both their reverse matches, when Suhas Chavan caused the biggest upset, beating Suhas Kulkarni to level the scores and Sarosh Shroff winning the decider against Pinakin, to win the match 3-2. However, the joy of Captain Colony team could not last longer, as they lost Jain Sports, Pune team comprising of former international Sunil Babras and his team mate Upendra Muley 0-3 in the 1st semi finals.
In the other semi finals, Gomantak A team, represented by Rajesh Singh, Kiran Salian and Rajesh Mudam, which had beaten YMCA’A’ team, lost tamely to strong looking Solapur DTTA team represented by Dr.Nitin Toshniwal & Manish Rawat. Earlier in the quarter finals, Solapur DTTA had beaten Gomantak’B’ 3-0 and Jain Sports, Pune, had beaten Nagpur Orange team 3-0.
Former international Faroukh Khodaiji, was personally present to witness the matches today morning and he was welcomed by P.J.Hindu Gymkhana TT secretary Miten Khatau and others. The matches in individual events in vetrans’ Men and women will be played in afternoon session, while the finals will be played today evening.
