Shivam Dubey completed a fine double century and remained unconquered on 211 as Karnatak Sporting Association, who resumed at their overnight score of 448 for 5 wickets, finished their first innings at 502 for 7 wickets from their quota of 90 overs against MIG Cricket Club on day two of their three-day final of the Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd. sponsored 69th Police invitation Shield Cricket Tournament – 2016, and played at the Police Gymkhana ground, Marine Drive, on Saturday.
The left-handed Dubey, who was batting on 191 when stumps were drawn on day one, started the second day a bit cautiously and scored mostly off singles to ensure he reached the 200 runs mark. Dubey’s overnight partner Vinayak Bhoir who was batting on 70, could only add a further 13 runs before being dismissed for 83. MIG’s medium pacer Nikhil Date was the most impressive bowler and finished with a haul of 5 for 94.
In reply, MIG were steadily progressing at 341 for the loss of 4 wickets from 74.4 overs at the end of the second day’s play. MIG require a further 162 runs from 92 balls (15.2 overs) to take the first innings lead.
Opener Sumit Ghadigaonkar compiled a fine century 101 runs from 171 balls with 11 boundaries. The other opener Sandeep Kunchikor (58) and middle order bat Omkar Jadhav (83) worked hard to score half centuries as MIG had to deal with some defensive tactics adopted by the opposition.
Gaurav Jathar (batting 42) and Balkrishna Shirke (batting 41) were at the crease when play ended. Vaibhav Mali (3 for 79) was the pick of the Karnatak bowlers. Both Jathar and Shirke and the remaining MIG batsmen will have to come out all guns blazing on Sunday morning and try to score some quick runs to try and snatch the crucial first innings lead or at least ensure they do not concede a big lead.
The second innings which will consist of 40 overs per side will ultimately decide the outcome of the contest.
