IILF Wealth Mumbai International Open Chess
Mumbai, January 30: Top seed Shardul Gagare of Maharashtra registered his third successive win defeating B Sekar in a third round match of the IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Open Chess Tournament 2016, being played at Mount Litera School International, Bandra (East), Mumbai, here, on Saturday.
With the point earned from the win, Shardul achieved the three points that he had required to become India’s latest Grandmaster.
Shardul, the quiet 18-year-old from a tiny town, Rahuri, near Shirdi, in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, made the country proud. Shardul’s dad, Dr Annasaheb Gagare, had tears of joy in his eyes the moment his son completed his game. “It was an incredibly tough journey and I am happy Shardul made it,” said the proud father.
The pre requisite for a Grandmaster title is to achieve three GM Norms and achieve the rating of 2500. Shardul took off in this event with an International ELO rating of 2497, needing precious 3 rating points to touch the magical mark of 2500. With a convincing third round win over B Sekar, Shardul did just that becoming India’s latest Grandmaster.
Sharing the lead with Shardul on 3 points are International Master’s Swapnil Dhopade, Stany GA, Nitin S, Himanshu Sharma among others.
