Senhora D’Souza & Shubham Ambre won the Women’s and Men’s Singles finals respectively, to become Champions of the Matunga Gymkhana- Selection Sports & MCDTTA organised 4 Star All Mumbai Table Tennis Championship yesterday evening. The 5 day long tournament was played under the auspices of MCDTTA & TSTTA.
In the finals of Women’s Singles, Senhora took her time to understand the backhand strokes of her opponent Manasi Chiplunkar as she kept playing on her strong backhand. Most of their rallies were back hand to back hand. In this process, Senhora lost the first two games, allowing her opponent 2-0 lead. However, at the beginning of the third game, the body language of the Bank of Baroda Officer clearly indicated that she was in her rhythm and was in a good position to play on both the flanks of her opponent and went on to win this game 11-6. In the fourth game Senhora took early lead and continued without breaking her rhythm, to win this game at 11-1 and equalise the set scores at 2-2. Her win with a big margin in the fourth game, only boosted her self confidence, to take the fifth game and match with comfort.
The Men’s Singles finals played between Shubham Ambre and Junior Sharveya Samant witnessed some very good long rallies and from start to finish it turned out to be an exciting match which was stretched to five games. The deciding 5th game witnessed a battle of nerves but the cool and calm Shubham at the most crucial stage, managed to win this game and match at 11-9. Before this match, Sharveya had played in two finals of Boys U-17 and Boys U-19 losing to Dhruv Shah in both these finals with the same set scores 2-3. But, Sharveya displayed some very good strokes. His way of blocking the spin attack of his opponent was something special, as he used variation of speed in that too, which surprised his opponent on many occasions. He should however focus more on trying variety in services.
12 year old Divyanshi Bhowmick won her fourth triple crown of this season and proved her supremacy in Girls U-15, U-17 and U-19 events. Wish, she had played in Women’s Singles too. However, the rule of permiting a player to play only in two more upper group events besides her own age group event, has prevented her from taking part in women’s event. But, she has long way to go, as she has been performing extremely well at the international WTT tournaments too. Divyanshi beat Vaishnavi 3-0 in Girls U-15, Shravani Loke 3-0 in Girls U-17 followed by 3-0 win over Hardee Patel in Girls U-19 to lift the triple crown.
Dhruv Shah the stylish left hander, who is known for his superb ball control during long rallies, beat his most challenging opponent Sharveya Samant in two events . Both his matches were stretched to five games. Their U-19 Boys final was more exciting and inspired many children present at the venue. In the Girls U-13 event, Myraa Sagelkar won her second consecutive Gold medal . The Veterans Men’s and Women’s 40+ titles were won by Suhas Rane and Shravani Dhapre, both from PTKS. While Suhas Rane faced resistence from Kedar kasbekar, having won his two out of three games over extra points, Shravani made it easy, overcoming Ujwala Marathe in three straight games.
