Sangeeta Chandorkar,Prashant Deorukhkar win YMCA District Carrom


 

Top seed Sangeeta Chandorkar of Reserve Bank of India lived up to her top billing as she snuffed out a strong challenge from second seed Preeti Khedekar of CDA (Controller of Defence Accounts) Indian Navy in a tense and nail-biting  women’s singles final of the Rs 1.10 lakh prize-money 6th Muthoot Finance-Bombay YMCA Mumbai District Ranking Carrom Tournament- 2019, organized by Procter YMCA and played at the Procter YMCA branch, Agripada, Mumbai Central.

Sangeeta and Preeti fought hard and the scores ran close throughout. The number one seed Sangeeta won a tight first game, but Preeti came roaring back to win the second and take the match to the decider. Once again in the third game, both Sangeeta and Preeti gave it their best shot before the former managed to scrape through winning by a 25-19, 11-25 and 25-16 scoreline to emerge champion.

 

Earlier in the penultimate round Sangeeta staved off the spirited fight from unseeded Shilpa Palnitkar of LIC snatching a hard-fought 25-16, 25-13 win, while Preeti tamed second seed Sushma Pardesi of Shivatara CC coasting to a 25-6, 25-9 victory.

Unseeded Sandeep Deorukhkar of ONGC maintained the superb winning momentum to emerge champion. Deorukhkar hardly put a foot wrong and comfortably cruised past World champion and fourth seed Prashant More of Reserve Bank of India posting a 2-0 win in the men’s singles final of the Rs 1.10 lakh prize-money 6th Muthoot Finance-Bombay YMCA Mumbai District Ranking Carrom Tournament- 2019, organized by Procter YMCA and played at the Procter YMCA branch, Agripada, Mumbai Central.

 

The experienced Deorukhkar was high on confidence and employed some clever tactics as he played some perfect shots to unsettle the World champ More, who was struggling to find his touch and was unable to put up a decent fight. Deorukhkar capitalized from every opportunity to sink his coins to win the boards as he went on to assert his domination. After easily winning the first game, he was all charged up and went on to pocket the second without losing a single board as he quickly wrapped up the match at 25-11, 25-0 to claim YMCA crown.

 

Earlier in the penultimate round encounters, World champion and fourth seed Prashant More played steadily and sent top seed Zahid Ahmed of Air India crashing out. More showed more confidence and better tactical superiority against the number one seed Ahmed and charged to a straight games 25-17, 25-16 victory to march into the final.

 

On the side board, unseeded Sandeep Deorukhkar showed  good form to register a stunning win against second seed Girish Tambe of MCGM in the other semi-final. Deorukhkar struck the coins with consistent accuracy and hardly faced much challenge from the number two seed Tabme and comfortable sailed to 25-7, 25-15 victory.

 

In men’s singles competition, the top two seeds Zahid Ahmed (Air India) and Girish Tambe (MCGM), fourth seed Prashant More (Reserve Bank of India) and Sandeep Deorukhkar (ONGC), all won their respective quarter-final matches to progress to the semi-finals.

 

The number one seed Zahid Ahmed after encountering initial resistance came into his own and sidelined Amol Sawardekar (MLWB) winning at 25-23, 25-2, while second seed Girish Tambe faced a strong a challenge from Faizan Ansari (SS Group) but managed to come through in three well-contested game at 25-11, 18-25 and 25-19.

 

World champion and fourth-seeded Prashant More got the better of fifth-seeded Vikas Dharia (MCGM) by pulling off a straight games 25-21, 25-6, while in a contest between unseeded players Sandeep Deorukhkar recovered after losing the first game and staged a remarkable fight back to win the next two games and clinch a satisfying 5-25, 25-8 and 25-10 success and a place in the last four.

 

In the semi-finals, Zahid Ahmed will meet Prashant More and Girish Tambe will clash with Sandeep Deorukhkar .
