Dr. Pramod Mulay the most enthusiastic Table Tennis player and veterans Table tennis Champion in 75+ age group, passed away at his Pune residence due to severe heart attack. He was 78. Recently, in the first state Ranking veterans’ Table Tennis tournament at PYC Gymkhana, Pune, Dr. Mulay was finalist in the Men’s 75+ group. Incidentally, his 78th birthday was also celebrated on the same day.
A Radiologist in medical profession, he actively played the game of table tennis for the past 56 years. Magzmumbai had interviewd him two years ago in Mumbai, while he played the PJ Hindu Gymkhana veterans TT Championship. He was so active with the game of Table tennis that he regularly practiced at PYC Gymkhana with his practice partners Avinash Joshi and others. He also made it a point to play most of the ranking tournaments held all over Maharashtra, including the Veterans National Championship.
Yesterday evening Dr.Mulay had invited his friend and seasoned veterans player Avinash Joshi to his residence and had even expressed his desire to play table tennis that evening , but had to cancel the session due to heavy rains. So, he asked Avinash to come to his place as he wanted to show him his new bat. According to Avinash, both had discussion on his favourite topic of table tennis and he left his place at 8.15 pm. But, later at 9.15 pm Dr. Mulay complained of back pain and severe acidity and asked his wife to get a hot water massage bag to get relief. However, by the time she approached him, he had already collapsed due to massive heart attack.
Dr. Mulay’s funeral will take place on Tuesday after arrival of his relatives from abroad. Condolence messages are pouring in from hundreds of veteran TT players on social networking sites. Many of them have called it a shocking news and have described him as very charming and enthusiastic personality. Some have called him a shining example of a perfect human being and a great sportsperson. National Veterans 65+ TT champion Deepak Dudhane said, “May Dr.Mulay always be with us as a source of inspiration and strength to do the right things, whatever circumstances we face.” National 60+ Veterans TT Champion Prakash kelkar also described him as a great human being and never missed an opportunity to spend some time in his company at every Veterans TT tournament. His passing away is a big loss to all veteran TT players and tournament organizers. May his soul rest in peace.
