The sixth day of Sports For All 2016 was a starry affair with as many as 800 students from over 100 schools competing in three high-profile sporting categories — football, shooting and squash — at the DY Patil Stadium here on Saturday.
After an action-packed day, the line-ups for the boys’ Under 12 and 10 semifinals and the girls’ Under 10 finalists were confirmed, with Reliance Foundation School, Navi Mumbai establishing themselves as strong favourites to win the title.
Reliance boys’ who have been most dominant team so far continued their impressive run, easing past both their opponents during the day to qualify for the semifinals. They started in style registering a thumping 13-0 win against Holy Cross Convent School, Mira Road. Young Yanglem Singh led the onslaught with four goals and was well aided by Pratik Saha and Yash Goel, who scored a treble each. Harsh Vagela bagged a brace.
In their second match, they drubbed Akim Ali Mitha Urdu High School 6-0, who qualified for the quarterfinals by beating Cambridge School, Kandivali 6-2. Supratim Das was the wrecker-in-chief with his four goals, while Harsh and Yanglem scored a goal apiece.
RBK School, Mira Road cruised into the semifinals with identical 5-2 wins over Ryan International, Khargar and Fatima High School. St. Paul High School also made their way into the last four by winning 3-0 against Vibgyor High School in the pre-quarter finals and 4-1 against Udayachal High School in the quarterfinal. Delhi Public School, Nerul is the other team who qualified for semifinal.
In the Under-10 boys’ category, Apeejay School, Kharghar, State Bank Officers Association Public School, Vibgyor, Malad, Ryan International School (Chembur) qualified for the round four of the tournament. In the girl’s category, Jamnabai Narsee International School and JBCN, Parel with fight it tomorrow for the crown.
In shooting, Under-19 girls’ air rifle peep category Trisha Mukherjee of Fr. Agnel Multipurpose School and Junior College shot an impressive 383 out of 400, to end as the best shooter on the day for girls, while in the Boy’s under 19 category air rifle open category, Ameya Nibre (Warman Rao of Muranjan High School & Jr School ) shot 327 to run with the day’s honours. In the Under-17 air rifle peep event, Maanya Shetty (Lady Ratanbai & Sir Mathurdass Vissanji Academy) shot 373 to return with the best score for the day, while in the boys’ category Mohit Gowda (Fr. Agnel Multipurpose School and Junior College )shot 381.
The squash event saw young champions battle it out in the boys’ Under-9, Under-11, Under 13 & Under-15 categories. In the Under-9 classification, Anshuman Jaisingh of Smt. R.S.B arya Vidya Mandir lived up to his top billing and advanced to the quarterfinals with a straight game victory of 11-0 & 11-3 over Ashwin Mehta of DY PAtil International School, Worli. Krishiv Gupta ( Dhirubhai Ambani International School) the second seeded player also did not have to break much sweat and quarterfinals by beating Agrim Rishi of Euro School, Thane with a 11-1, 11-1 win.
Aimaan Zakaria, the son of Bollywood actor Arif Zakaria (Aditya Birla International School) was the top seeded player in the Under -13 category and he did not have much problem to move into the last eight round with a straight game 11-1,11-0 victory over Krish Lambah of Aditya Birla World Academy.
