Lanky Ravindra Kotian, the current men’s state champion, stopped junior Chinmaya Somayia’s winning streak, to bag the men’s singles title in the Khar Gymkhana-5-Star Mumbai Suburban District table tennis championships, here today. Though outplayed by the top seed in the beginning, Ravindra hit back with telling effect with controlled aggression to subdue the top seed 6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-13, 11-3, 7-11, 11-8.

However, Chinmaya had the consolation of winning the youth as well as the junior boys singles finals. But it was tough going for him, especially in the junior boys singles with Ashwin Subramanaian stretching him to the hilt before Chinmaya prevailed at 8-11, 11-8, 6-11, 13-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7. His victory ( 11-7, 11-6, 11-7, 11-13, 11-6) in the youth boys singles against error- prone top seed Jignesh Rahatwal was pretty convincing.
Bespectacled Vidhi Shah made terrific impact with her anti-spin backhand. After beating Diya Chitale 11-8, 5-11, 6-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, in the women’s singles final, Vidhi met her match against Anannya Basak, the youth girls top seed. It was Anannya strong forehand top spin drives on both flanks that that put paid to Vidhi’s guiles as Anannya triumphed 12-14, 11-7, 6-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-7,11-4. 6.
