Ravindra Kotiyan, Jash Modi, win men’s & boys’ U19, crowns


The Suburban Table Tennis Association ( TSTTA)  paddlers  from Mumbai continued with their splendid winning performances as Jash Modi and Ravindra Kotiyan claimed the Boy’s under-19 and Men’s singles crowns respectively in the RYP-Dr. Ramesh Yashwant Prabhoo Memorial 1st Maharashtra State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament 2021-2022, conducted by TSTTA under the auspices of the MSTTA and played at the Prabodhankar Thackeray Krida Sankul, Vile Parle late Tuesday evening.

Players from the hosts association TSTTA, won a creditable three of the four gold medals on offer on the concluding day. Arnav Karnavar had earlier won the boys’ under-21 title.

The top-seeded Jash of TSTTA, Mumbai, who had lost to Pune’s Neil Mulye in the under-17 final, produced a much improved display against teammate and sixth seed Arnav Karnavar in the under-19 title clash. Jash quickly put behind the earlier setback, and played confidently and also cut down on the errors which helped him seal an 11-6, 8-11, 12-10, 11-8, 5-11 and 11-8 victory to pick up the gold medal.

 

Later, 14th seed Ravindra rallied to prevail over Pune’s 13-seed Zubin Taraporewala 4-2 to bag the Men’s singles gold. Home challenger Ravindra made a shaky start and lost the first and third games to trail 1-2. But, he made a determined comeback and went on to win three successive games to complete a deserving 9-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9 and 11-3 win to secure TSTTA’s third success of the night.

 

Earlier, in the under-19 penultimate round, Jash underlined his supremacy over Anish Sontakke and smoothly sailed to a 11-5, 11-8, 11-5, 9-11 and 11-8 success to set up a summit clash with teammate Arnav Karnavar who defeated Nashik’s Kushal Chopda 11-7, 11-8, 9-11, 3-11, 11-8 and 14-12 in the second semi-final.
