‘Project Marathwada’ highlights farmer’s suicides


Marathwada in Maharashtra State has always been an arid region which culminates into frequent droughts. The paucity of rains adds to the vulnerability of farmers in this region which has seen many a suicide deaths in recent times. Surprisingly more than three lac farmers have committed suicides in our country in the last two decades.

This burning subject of farmer’s suicide is the very baseline of forthcoming new hindi movie ‘Project Marathwada’. Produced by producer Prakash Patel under the banner Jairush Entertainment in association with Wadia Productions and Eagle Eye Entertainment, this film is being directed by Bhavin Wadia. The debutant director is responsible for the story and the screenplay of the film too.

Teaser of 60 seconds and trailer of 90 seconds were released at The View, one of the plushest preview venues in the suburbs, amidst the cast and crew of the film. Om Puri, who plays a Marathwada based debt-ridden farmer whose son commits suicide aggravating his plights and who wants to meet Chief Minister to imbibe excruciating grievances of his fellow villagers is unsuccessful but accidentally meets a bunch of four students working on a project of farmer’s suicides and they together try to fight the system, was prominently present, nursing an injury on hand. He shared his views on the present atrocious scenario in our country on the subject. ‘Prakash Patel (the producer) needs a pat on his back for investing money on this kind of risky subject wherein he could have easily splurged on a profit generating Bhojpuri film. I sincerely hope that this film reaches maximum number of people so that sufferings of farmers come to the fore because people who feed us are ignored by us.’ Om Puri was talking vociferously. It’s ironical that farmers are committing suicides for paltry sums whereas liquor-magnate flee the country gobbling up thousands of crores of rupees.

Project Marathwada’s cast comprises of Om Puri, Dalip Tahil, Govind Namdeo, Seema Biswas, Kunal Seth, Rahul Patel, Katrina, Farrah Kader and is ready for release on 3rd June 2016.
