The second-seeded pairing of Nisha Springett and Palkan Dave emerged champions winning Women’s (combined 75+ age) doubles crown in the 27th G.D. Birla Memorial Masters Inter-Club Badminton Tournament 2020, organized and hosted by Bombay Gymkhana and Badminton 45, under the aegis of GMBA & MBA and played at the Bombay Gymkhana courts on Saturday. The event is supported by Aditya Birla Capital and promoted by Badminton Gurukul.
Nisha and Palkan rose to the occasion in grand fashion and quashed the challenge from the unseeded duo of Naheed Divecha and Nisha Rani smoothly cruising to a 21-11, 21-10 victory in the summit clash.
In the semi-finals, the unseeded combination of Divecha and Rani played with plenty of grit and determination to stun the top-seed pairing of Pooja Khandekar and Swapnal Chakraborty snatching a 21-19 and 23-21 win, while second seeds Nisha Springett and Palkan Dave tamed the unseeded duo of Kiran Shete and Shikha Lamb winning in two quick games at 21-9, 21-3.
Earlier, Vikrant Khushawaha of Cricket Club of India maintained his impressive winning form and easily defeated second seed Manoj Nachanekar of Wellingdon Sports Club 21-19, 21-16 in the Professional singles final.
Khushawaha had earlier sidelined Bombay Gymkhana’s top seed Rajan Samant wining in three tough games at 21-15, 16-21 and 21-18 in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Nachanekar rallied to overcome Premal Mankar of Jolly Gymkhana by a 17-21, 21-6, 21-12 verdict in the second semi-final.
Kalpesh Padekar and Sanjay Golbare of P.J. Hindu Gymkhana combined well and got the better of the Khar Gymkhana pair of Jayesh Develkar and Lalit Bane clinching a hard-fough 21-16, 16-21, 21-8 victory in the Professional doubles final.
