Mumbai Knights ride on Priyanka hat-trick


Strong contenders Mumbai Knights were in impressive form and charged to a fluent 7-0 win against Puneri Warriors in a seventh round match of the Maharashtra State women’s football league played at the Cooperage football ground on Sunday. The champions will qualify for the AIFF Indian Women’s Football League.

Consistent goal-scorer Priyanka once again played the lead scoring a hat-trick of goals to steer Mumbai Knights to a massive victory. Prolific scorer Valencia D’Mello chipped in with two late goals while Alexandra Eccard and Riya D’Souza contributed one each to complete the margin of victory.

Earlier, Footie First, Mumbai and Football School of India (FSI), Navi Mumbai shared honours as they were engaged in a goalless draw.

Mumbai Knights dictated terms from the start and midway through the first half took the lead through Alexandra in the 19th minute and went into the break with a slender 1-0 advantage.

However, on resumption Mumbai Knights showed more attacking intent and struck six more goals during this period to complete the winning tally. Priyanka netted the first of her three goals in the 47th minute and two minutes later Riya scored the third to put her team in the driver’s seat. Later, Priyanka struck two more goals in the 63rd and 75th minutes to widen the lead to 5-0. Valencia applied the finishing touches to Mumbai Knights victory hitting the target twice in the 87th and 90th minutes.
