Maharashtra’s winning streak comes to an end

The winning streak of Maharashtra (WIFA) came to a grinding halt as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Chandigarh in the concluding Group-II league match of the Hero 27th Senior Women’s National Football Championship 2022-23, played at the IGIS Complex, Haldwani, Uttarakhand.

Maharashtra had convincingly won the previous four matches and having accumulated an unassailable 12 points are sitting pretty atop the group and assured of qualifying for the next phase of the championship. Chandigarh who recorded their third win finished with 11 points and in second position, while Kerala with nine points was third.

Head coach Sanaya Anklesaria decided to rest several of her key players and included the reserves in the starting line-up. Despite not playing with a full-strength side, the Maharashtra outfit put up a good fight, but failed to convert their chances that came their way and went down by a solitary goal.

Against the run of play Chandigarh netted the decisive goal through Ritu S. in the 35th minute. They managed to hold on to that lead to seal the win and the three valuable points.

Result: Maharashtra 0 lost to Chandigarh 1 (Ritu S.).
