Maharashtra’s Shant Hingorani recovers to defeat Haryana’s Vairaj


Maharashtra’s Shant Hingorani produced a remarkable fightback to overcome Haryana’s Vairaj Singh snatch a tense 9-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-8 and 11-2 win in a Boys’ under-17 round of 32 match of the 78th CCI-Western India Slam Squash Championship 2023, organized by the Cricket Club of India (CCI) under the auspices of the SRFI (Squash Rackets Federation of India) at the CCI squash courts on Tuesday.

In another well-contested boys under-17 encounter, Ritwik Singh Bundela of Rajasthan gallantly fought back to overcome Karnataka’s Adit Kabade posting a 6-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-7 and 11-8 win.

Meanwhile, Varun Shah and Ishaan Dabke, both players who train at the CCI courts easily won their boys’ under-15 round of 32 matches. Second seed Varun outplayed Dhanvin Shroff of Maharashtra charging to an11-2, 11-5 and 11-1. On the side court, the joint 3/4-seed Ishaan got the better of another Maharashtra lad Rishabh Goyal romping to an 11-7, 11-3 and 11-2 victory.

The boys’ under-15 top seed Subhash Choudhary of Rajasthan dropped just three games in getting past Maharashtra’s Kiaan Shah 11-1, 11-1 and 11-1 and second seed Varun Shah of England defeated Dhanvin Shroff 11-2, 11-5, 11-1 to advance to the last 16.

Meanwhile, West Bengal’s Vir Beri enjoyed smooth sailing and cruised past Maharashtra’s Siddharth Chaudhari with a 11-5, 11-5 and 11-7 verdict in a boys’ under-15 round of 32 match.

Amaira Mehta, who also plays at the CCI courts, was another youngster who succeeded in winning her girls’ under-15 round of 32 match. The energetic Amaira prevailed over her Maharashtra colleague Miraya Dalmia winning in three games at 11-8, 11-4 and 11-6.

Goa’s Asrit Pasricha and Maharashtra’s Tara Bhandare registered fluent victories in girls’ under-13 encounters. Asrit outplayed Maharashtra’s Anika Jalan breezing to a 11-6, 12-10 and 11-5 victory, while Tara was in full flow and tamed Misha Nc cruising to a 11-4, 11-0 and 11-2 victory without much ado.
