RelianceFoundation crowned Champs


The curtains came down on the football events of Sports For All 2016, with Reliance Foundation School, State Bank Officers Association School (SBOA) and JBCN, Dadar cornering the Boys’ Under-12 and Under-10 and Girls’ Under-12 titles respectively at the DY Patil Stadium here on a thrilling Sunday.

Reliance Foundation, who have been on a goal-scoring spree with as many as 52 to their credit, began the day with yet another dominating performance against RBK School, MIra Road. They beat them 6-0 to set up the title clash with St. Paul’s High School, Dadar who sneaked into the finals with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Delhi Public School, Nerul.

Not too surprisingly, the final too proved to be one-sided, with young forward Yanglem Singh leading the charge with 5 goals. Reliance wrapped it up 10-1 with Harsh Vagala notching up a treble and Narendra Nair and Yash Goel also getting their names on the score sheet with a goal each. St. Paul’s averted a total whitewash, thanks to goalkeeper Atharva Sawant who pulled off an astonishing 13 saves. Atharva Rawale scored his team’s only goal during the dying moments of the match, to become the highest goal-scorer in the tournament with 11 goals.

In the Boys’ Under-10 category, SBOA set up the title clash with Vibgyor High School, Malad, by beating Apeejay School, Kharghar 4-3 in the shootout. Vibgyor made it to the finals by beating Ryan International School, Chembur 3-1.

 

It was an intriguing affair, with SBOA and Vibgyor unable to break the 1-1 deadlock during regulation time. Sadly for Vibgyor, their custodian committed a grave error and conceded a self-goal in extra time to seal their fate. Aayush Dongre of SBOA scored the lone goal for his team to become the highest scorer in this category.

JBCN girls, who came into the finals as firm favorites, did not disappoint and mustered a thumping 4-2 victory over Jamnabai Narsee International School to win the title. Charvi Seth, who has been in the prime form through the tournament, rose to the occasion once again and scored a brace on the big day to become the most prolific scorer with nine goals. Her teammates Saashvi Jogani and Kashish chipped in with one goal each. For Jamnabai, Samiha Chatwal scored both their goals.

 

In the Under-17 air rifle open sight Boys’ category, Rahul Sharma of St. Joseph High School & Jr. College, Kalamboli and Keshav Kushwaha of Shantiniketan Public School were tied with 275 points each. But Rahul, who had shot rounds of 60, 63, 72 & 80 edged out the latter’s 61, 66, 74 & 74 on countback.

 

In the Under-17 open sight Girls’ classification, Akansha Hande of South Indian Welfare Society School, Wadala finished with a total of 307, thanks to her rounds of 79, 74, 73 & 81 to end at the top of the table.

 

In the Under-17 air rifle peep sight Boys’ category, Aryan Deolaker of Peoples Education Society English Medium School shot a total of 381 (95,97, 97,92) to finish as the best shooter of the day, while Anushka Puranik of DAV Public School, Thane in the Under-17 air rifle peep sight girls’  category, accumulated a total of 346 points (85,89, 90,82) to stay ahead of the pack.

 

The squash event also some intense action with Shlok Sahay of DPS Nerul stealing the limelight in the Under 17 boys’ category, beating Aarash Mehta of Oberoi Internation School 11-6, 11-7, 11-6 to move into the semifinals.

 

In the Under-11 boys’ category, top seeded Aimaan Zakaria of Aditya Birla World School continued his good form and beat Neel Paswan of Jindal Vidya Mandir 11-2, 11-4, 11-4 to cruise into the round of last four.

 

In the Under-13 boys’ category, fifth seeded Prakash Ahuji of Jindal Vidya Mandir pulled off a stunning comeback to beat his schoolmate Uday Pandey 6-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7 & 11-5.
