Kareena Shankta of Forest Club piped fancied Vedika Amin in a thrilling finish to win gold in the 50m breaststroke in the girls II section on a day when five more new records were set on the second day of the GMAAA Age Group Aquatic championships, held at Tata Swimming pool, Chembur, here today. Kareena not only surprised hot favourite Vedika, but in the process broke Monique Gandhi’s 2012 record of 00:36.62 secs, by clocking 00:35.23 secs. Kareena, on the first day had won gold with record-breaking gold in the 100n backstroke.
In yet another exciting record-breaking finish, IIT (Powai)’s Apeksha Fernandes clinched gold in the 200m breaststroke event in the same section. Apeksha’s timing of 02:32.60 rewrote the existing record of 02:32.60 set by Aakanksha Vora of Otters in 2012. The most heartening feature in this event ,was that even the second-placed Aanya Wala (Otters) and Tanisha Chheda (Matunga Gymkhana) also improved upon the old mark.
Khar Gymkhana’s Neel Roy continued to dominate the pool in the boys section, adding three golds to the two he won on the first day. In the process, he broke records in the 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle events. Later, he added another in the 200m individual medley too..Otters Club’s Srish Maulik, who took home the 100m backstroke record-breaking gold in 01:14.10 secs on the first day, added another by winning the 50m breaststroke event in the boys II section.
