- Junior Ashwin Subramanian, from Mumbai Suburbs ,knocked out top-seeded Yugandh Zende from Thane (4-2) , in a thrilling youth boys singles to storm into the semifinals of the YMCA-5th Maharashtra State ranking table Tennis tournament, held at Goregaon Sports Club, here today. Aswin led 3-0 before Zende could settle down. Zende, however,fought back tellingly thereafter to take the next two games to narrow the gap. However, fighter Aswin kept ahead in the sixth game which he clinched over extra points. Incidentally, it was Ashwin’s second win over Zende this season.

However,Zende,who is also top seeded in the men’ s singles, redeemed himself by overpowering Jignesh Rahatwal, of MSD, in straight games to breeze into men’s singles quarterfinals. Joining him in the last eight was lanky Ravindra Kotian, current men’s state champion. Ravindra,who has not played after the last state championships, made his presence felt by eliminating fourth seeded Zubin Taraporwala, from Thane 11-3, 7-11, 9-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8, 11-6.
However, Thane’s Sanish Ambekar, seeded third, and Tejas Kamble played their hearts out to win their respective singles for a place in the last eight.
