It is for the first time India has sent a biggest contingent of 118 sportspersons for the ongoing RiO Olympics. These players had qualified for this biggest sports event in the world, held every four years. The maximum number of participants from India are 35 in Athletics, followed by 16 reach in Men’s and Women’s Hockey , 12 in shooting, 8 in wrestling and so on.
India were to open the account for medals , but their Women’s archery team, which had qualified for Quarter finals, put up a good show on the 2nd day, when they defeated Colombia 5-3, to move into semi finals, when they meet Russia.
Indian rower Dattu Baban Bhokanal has also entered the quarter-finals of the men’s single sculls after finishing third in his qualifying round. But, there was poor showing in the Tennis when leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna disappointed with their loss, followed by Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombre also going down fighting a good battle against the Chinese pair. Jitu Rai finished eighth in the men’s 10 metre Air Pistol event. But, he produced a string of poor shots for a total score of 78.7 and was the first to be eliminated from the eight-man final on the 2nd day today.
In Table tennis, there was poor show from Mouma Das in the first round, while Sharat Kamal could manage only one game, before losing in the first round. But, Manika Batra Indian men’s hockey have beaten Ireland 3-2 and will be taking on Germany in their next match, while Indian women’s are battling in their ‘Ckak De ‘ match against Japan.
