Indian Oil down CAG to clinch GTB Gold Cup


 

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), New Delhi maintained their brilliant winning streak as they defeated CAG (Comptroller & Auditor General of India), New Delhi by a 3-1 margin in the final of the 15th Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Gold Cup All India Hockey Tournament 2019, at the MHAL stadium, Churchgate on Saturday.

The highlight of Indian Oil’s victory was Talwinder Singh’s excellent scoring performance as he scored all the three goals. Govind Singh Rawat scored CAG’s goal from a penalty corner conversion in the 58th minute.

 

This was the seventh title success for Indian Oil, who have been very impressive throughout this season. They contested the finals of all the eight major tournaments in the country and their only defeat was against Punjab & Sind  Bank via the penalty shootout in the All-India Surjit Memorial Hockey Tournament in Jalandhar last October.

 

The former champions Indian Oil were sluggish initially and were unable to play their usual free-flowing game and the scoreboard remained blank at the end of the first quarter.

 

But, in the second quarter, Indian Oil, finally opened the scoring when Talwinder scored with a simple tap-in following a long hit from the left in the 26th minute. Later, the alert international Talwinder was quick to push past CAG custodian Ravinder Kharb for the second goal in the 39th minute and then scored the third in the 54th minute to complete his hat-trick.

 

CAG who put up quite a good fight scored the lone goal through a penalty conversion by Govind Singh Rawat in the 58th minute.

 

The victorious Indian Oil team received the Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup and a cheque of Rs two lakhs from MHAL President, Mangha Singh Bakshi and wife Jaswinder Kaur. MHAL Gen. Secretary Ram Singh Rathor presented CAG with the runner-up trophy and a cash award of Rs one lakh.
