India dominate the South Asian Veterans TT Championship in Colombo


With maximum players participating in the recently South Asian Veterans Table Tennis Championship held in Colombo, the Indian team players showed their supremacy in almost all sections of the Men and Women team events. In an exciting men’s 40+ team match India beat Pakistan 3-2.

Except for the 40+ Men’s singles, where India’s Vikas Mahajan had to concede the final match to Sri Lanka’s most  aggressive player Indika Prasad, due to injury in his right arm, the Indian TT players also dominated in individual events . The tournament had invited participation from countries like India, Pakistan, Nepal, Maldives and host Sri Lanka.SLVTTA 1

 

Sunil Babras celebrated his birthday with a convincing victory over Pakistan’s star player Aseem Qureshi in the 50+ Men’s finals, while in other finals, it was a contest between Indian players, except for the Men’s doubles in 40+ where India’s Kiran Salian and Rajesh Singh scored easy victory over Sri Lankan Indika Prasad & Prasanna.

 

In the men’s 60+ singles India’s evergreen Prakash Kelkar proved his supremacy stopping the run of his team mate & hard hitter Jayant Kulkarni, who had earlier beaten Jagannath Mohite & Avinash Joshi in quarter and semi finals respectively. Prakash kelkar along with Jayant Kulkarni , Avinash Joshi won Gold medal in 60+ men’s team event. SVTTA 60

 

In the 60+ women’s singles( All from India) , Mangal Saraf   beat Sunanda Rao, while in 65+ Women’s singles, Latika P beat Manisha Bodas.SVTTA Women 50

 

The Men’s 65+ Finals was a good contest between National Champion Deepak Dudhane and Satish Kulkarni , with Deepak displaying his patience by winning the match 3-2  in spite of being down 0-2.

 

Earlier Deepak had beaten former international Suhas Kulkarni in semi finals for the second time in this tournament( the previous being in team event) while Satish fought hard to overcome the challenge from Ulhas Shirke, in five well contested games in the other semi finals. The Indian team in Men’s 65 + comprising of Suhas Kulkarni, Ulhas Shirke & Satish Kulkarni bagged Gold medal in team event. SVTTA men 65

 

Women’s 40+ final was also a contest between two Indian players Shilpa Joshi and Deepali Gortakke , which was won by more consistent Shilpa in straight games. The Women’s 40+ Women’s doubles final was won by Aparna Nampally & Geeta Tandon who beat Mamata J and Deepali Gortakke.SVTTA Women winners

 

Women’s 50+ finals was also  between India’s Mantu Murmu and Dr. Anagha Joshi , with Montu winning the match with a narrow  margin. The Women’s 50+ doubles final was won by Montu M and Anagha Joshi who beat Mangal Saraf and Neeta Kulkarni 3-1. Mangal Saraf along with Neeta Kulkarni & Mantu Murmu bagged the Women’s team event 50+.
