IM Stany stuns GM Shardul


International Master Stany G.A. (6 points) recorded a stunning victory over top seed and GM-elect Shardul Gagare (4.5 points) in the sixth round of the IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Open Chess Tournament 2016, and being played at Mount Litera School International, Bandra (East), Mumbai, here, on Tuesday.

Stany enjoys the sole lead and is closely followed by Swapnil S Dhopade and Gusain Himal by with 5.5 points each. Dhopade scored over Akshat Khamparia (4.5 points), while Gusain defeated Dinesh Sharma (4 points) in sixth round ties.
In other upsets during the sixth round, International Master Anup Deshmukh went down to Matta Vinay Kumar, while International Master Himanshu Sharma was held to a draw by talented Bharambe Bhavik.

Meanwhile, 9-year-old Gukesh D of Chennai continued his good run scoring over World Under-10 Champion Praggnanandhaa, to end the sixth round with 5 points.
Three rounds remain in this nine round Swiss tournament that has a total prize money of Rs 7.5 lakhs with the Champion getting richer by Rs 1.5 lakhs.

In the event for juniors, FIDE Master Mohammad Fahad Rahman of Bangladesh (4.5 points) played out a draw with Gukesh D. of India (4.5 points) to share the lead after the fifth round.

Sharing the lead at 4.5 points were Mohammad Fahad Rahman (Ban), Gukesh D, Aditya Mittal, Mendonca Leon Luke and B. Sriram among others.
