WCG Rink football
St. Gonsalo Garcia Parish, Vasai and Immaculate Conception Parish, Borivali ground out hard-fought victories in high-voltage and pulsating semi-final encounters in the Men’s Open event of the Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana organized 31st Inter-Parish 5-a-side Rink Football Tournament – 2018, for the Victor D’Mello Trophy.
In the first match, St. Gonsalo rallied to overcome St. Joseph’s, Juhu 5-3 and later Immaculate Conception got the better of a spirited St. Blaise, Amboli by a similar 5-3 scoreline.
In the penultimate round of matches played under floodlights, the four teams played at an exhilarating pace and scorched the the Willingdon Gymkhana’s tennis courts and they provided the large gathering of enthusiastic spectators plenty of exciting moments.
The Vasai parish were well-served by Royston Veigas who struck two goals and Seltzer Menezes, Nigel D’Souza and Dwayne Vaz all chipping in with one goal each to complete the win. St. Joseph’s scored through Kenneth Fernandes, Deepak Singh and Nehar Tirkey.
For Immaculate Conception, Calvin Pereira and Colin Abranches, both struck two goals each and Sunnt Thakur added one, while St. Blaise got their goals with Danzel Fernandes netting a brace and Jason Miranda with one.
Immaculate Conception, Borivali also entered the final of the Ladies Open event, after they defeated Bandra Packers Blue by a narrow 1-0 margin with striker Angeline Anthony netting the lone winning goal.
However, Bandra Packers Yellow defeated Bodyline SC 6-1 in the second semi-final. Deepika Masurkar, Namrata Thakur and Hiba Faquih all contributed with two goals each while Bodyline puled one back through Sai Sankhe’s strike.
Results – Open Veterans (semi-finals): Spartans Red 2 (Savio D’Sila 2) beat Bandra Packers 1 (Savio Rodrigues).
Ronnie 7 2 (Glen Moraes 1, Philip D’Souza 1) beat Golden Gunners 0.
Open Ladies (semi-finals): I.C. United, Borivali 1 (Angeline Anthony 1) beat Bandra Packers Blue 0.
Bandra Packers Yellow 6 (Deepika Masurkar 2, Namrata Thakur 2, Hiba Faquih 2) beat Bodyline SC 1 (Sai Sankhe).
Men Open (sem-finals): Immaculate Conception ‘B’, Borivali 5 (Calvin Pereira 2, Colin Abranches 2, Sunnt Thakur 1) beat St. Blaise ‘A’, Amboli 3 (Danzel Fernandes 2, Jason Miranda 1).
