Former Indian football player, Timothy Pereira, who represented the famed Tata Sports Club, passed away here in Mumbai, on Wednesday night after a prolonged illness. Pereira was 75.
He is survived by his wife, daughter and two sons, according to local football sources. He was the brother-in-law of hockey Olympian Joaquim Carvalho.
Pereira first played for Goan sports Association and State Bank of India before joining Tata SC and played along with other Tata stalwarts like Hafeez, Johar Das, late Marto Gracias, Tony Martin and S.S. (Babu) Narayan. After finishing off with Tatas, Pereira continued to play the game and represented Indian Cultural League (ICL).
He played for the country in 1967-68.
Pereira also played hockey and represented Catholic Gymkhana in the local league. Olympain M.M. Somaya recalled that he played alongside Pereira for Catholic Gym and that they were both members of the team that won the BHA First Division title in 1976.
The funeral mass will be held at the St. Blaise Church, Amboli, Andheri (West) on Saturday, June 2 at 10.00 am followed by burial.
