Eshaan Gupta and Vihaan Shetty both from Mumbai City with a tally of 5 points each are in joint pole position in the boys’ under-16 category of the Mahavir Prasad Morarka Memorial Maharashtra State Schools Chess Championship 2018, which is being played, here, at the Nehru Centre, Worli.
In sixth round matches, AFM Eshaan (5 points) outwitted Vinit Dhoot (4.5 points) to earn the full point on the top board and on the second board Vihaan (5 points) easily overcame Aryan Deogade (3.5 points).
In the Boys’ U-14 competition, lead remained unchanged as Rachit Lund and Rishi Kadam defeated their respective opponents to stay in front. Rishi (5,5 points) playing with the white pieces on the top board defeated Hriday Sangoi (4 points), while Rachit (5.5 points) played well with the black pieces and defeated Husain Nakara (4 points).
In the Girl’s U-14 event, Kiyarra Khaturia (5 points) holds the top position after securing a decisive win against Parnavi Rane (4.5 points), who has slipped to second position.
A total of 555 children from all the affiliated district of Maharashtra are participating in this 5-day event, which is being conducted by South Mumbai Chess Academy & Indian Chess School under the aegis of All Marathi Chess Associaiton and All India Chess Federaiton.
The top-two players in each category will be selected to represent Maharashtra in the National Schools 2019 to be held at Kolkata.
