England’s Downer easily marches into 4th round


England’s Robert Downer, the lone foreign participant, cruised into the fourth round of the men’s event of the 42nd Maharashtra State Men’s & Women’s Squash tournament, being organised under aegis of SRFI and Maharashtra Squash Rackets Association.

 

The Englishman Downer, who replaced Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu, who withdrew due to personal reasons late on Wednesday, as the number one seed tamed local lad Sanat Shah in three quick games in a third round encounter at the Bombay Gymkhana’s glass-back courts on Thursday.

 

Downer, who had a first round bye, did not have to get on court for his second round match as well as he was awarded a walkover after his opponent Avinash Sainani failed to report for the match. He finally managed to get down to action against Sanat Shah and it turned to be a perfect warm-up for the Englishman as he was in complete control and eased to an 11-4, 11-3, 11-2 win without exerting too much.

Earlier in second round matches, Maharashtra’s Aditya Jagtap, who was elevated as the second seed, had things much his own way and comfortably defeated Parth Jindal 11-0, 11-1, 11-6. The joint 3-4 seed Sandeep Jangra of Services dropped a game against Vardhan Ladiwala before completing a 11-5, 12-10, 8-11, 11-8 victory to also book his place in the third round.

 

Akhilesh Kumar Yadav, Abhishek Agarwal and Abhishek Pradhan also advanced to the fourth round. Akhilesh Yadav beat Rahul Arora 11-7, 11-3, 11-5, while Agarwal had quite a fight on hands before getting the better of Aaryaman Jaising 11-3, 11-7, 10-12, 11-3. Pradhan also face little problems as he got past Uttanshu Patel winning 11-7, 11-5 and 11-7.
