It was topsy turvey final day with Arnav Kanavar in men and schoolgirl Divyanshi Bhowmick in women toppled their respective top seeds and favourites Sagar Kasture and Ananya Chande to clinch the men’s and women’s singles titles in the JVPGC -TSTTA-5-Star Mumbai Suburban District Table Tennis Championships last night at Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana .While Arnav dominated off-colour Sagar to such an extent that he raced to 3-0 lead before Sagar could find his bears to take the fourth game. But then Arnav just thrashed him in the next to triumph 11-7, 11-7, 12-10, 7-11, 11-4.
But it was 13-year-old Dhivyanshi Bhowmick, ranked India No.2 in her age group, who was the cynosure of goodly crowd as she went on to capture four titles, viz. the women’s singles, youth girls (U-19), junior girls (U-17) and under-15 girls finals. Divyanshi, who too ranked No 8 internationally, thus added four titles to the six she has already won this season.
All the winners with chief guest- former Table Tennis international S. Ramaswami, TSTTA officials Yogesh Desai (Chairman) and Sameer Bhate (Hon. Secretary) along with Anil Mhesh (President of JVPG) and other gymkhana officials
However, she was down 0-2 against Ananya in the women’s singles final , before made it 2-all. As both played at furious pace, ultimately the fight went to decider before Divyanshi was through (4-3). The tie was virtually a repeat of her fight against Risha Michandani in the semi singles, before she triumphed 4-3 the best of 7 games. But there was no stopping Divyanshi in the girls under-17 and girls under-15 finals as she raced to straight games wins over her rivals.
