Customs down CTC, fail to make final


Mumbai Customs recorded a fighting 4-3 win against Champions Training Centre (CTC) in the concluding league match of the Mumbai Hockey Association Limited (MHAL) organised Mumbai Hockey Championship 2022, at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate on Sunday.

However, Customs with 10 points from 3 wins and a draw failed to qualify for the final. CTC and Union Bank, both with 12 points each finished in first and second position in the 6-team league and will clash in Monday’s final.

Earlier, Central Railway, who were also out of contention,  signed off with a bang defeating Republicans Sports Club 8-0 with former India forward Yuvraj Walmiki scoring four successive goals, while Jogender Singh netted a brace of goals and Basvaraj S. and Vinit Kamble adding one apiece.

CTC started in rousing fashion and raced to a 2-0 lead with Tikaram Thakulla and Akshay Rai scoring a goal in the second and third quarters. Customs came roaring back and scored four quick goals in the final quarter to finish with a satisfying consolation win. Venkatesh Kenche and Iktidar Ishrat both equally shared the four goals. Affan Yusuf netted CTC’s third goal.

Results: Central Railway 8 (Yuvraj Walmiki 4, Jogender Singh 2, Basvaraj S., Vinit Kamble) beat Republicans SC 0.

Mumbai Customs 4 (Venkatesh Kenche 2, Iktidar Ishrat 2) beat Champions Training Centre 3 (Tikaram Thakulla, Akshay Rai, Affan Yusuf).
